Practice Question

Simpson calls his book “Touching the Void”. How does he present the sense of danger and it’s effects on the climbers?

–> Language

–> Form / structure

Joe Simpson’s book “Touching the Void” presents mental danger in this quote “The irony of falling 100 feet and surviving unscathed was almost unbearable.” The mountain is teasing him keeping him alive and uninjured instead he is trapped in the crevasse. “Unbearable” in this situation he thought he was going to die on the way down, not end up on the crevasse, starved and dehydrated.

I can tell you now – argument writing

Why do buses take so long? Don’t the Government want traffic to just flow? Traffic lights, what are they used for? They’re meant to be there to stop traffic and all they do is create more of a problem. When you get on a bus and the stench collides with your nostrils and you don’t know which way to turn to get away from people’s smelly armpits and their sweaty selves and their contaminating germs/diseases, it’s, like, really. And let’s not forget their breath in the morning; it stinks – do you ever brush your teeth in the morning?

The Government wants to change the ground into something else: they are replacing the ground we walk on with tiles everywhere and it’s making the traffic even longer and it is getting harder to break though the traffic. It doesn’t matter what time in the morning you leave your house to attempt to get through the traffic – you can’t. We just have to wait for the builders finish their job, and still they don’t make an alternative route. It’s not like it’s a day without traffic, it’s an everyday thing, but I can’t get used to it. It puts you in a bad way because you have to get off the bus to walk and , minutes later the bus goes past you like it’s bad luck or something. When I do stay on the bus it takes so long that have to ask the driver to let me off and they just reject my order so I have to press the emergency button when I actually don’t want to cause it’s putting my life at risk – but sometimes you have to take that risk.

And why is the Government is turning places into disasters? Everywhere you go it’s closed due to the stupidity of improving an environment which is not needed as it is already in place. Even if there was a place that needed improving, why not just improve that particular place, not the whole “environment”. This is what leads to traffic. And don’t get me started on the bus arrivals. My gosh, it takes forever for a bus to come, and this is all linked to this creating an “environment”. When you do get on the bus you have to sit on a dusty, chewed up old seat. Maybe for once the bus is empty. Then someone decides to sit next to you and you just think what’s the point.

What is the point? The point is that why are we all living like this? What despot is in charge of all of this; they should get sacked and replaced with a person that has common sense. Why did we vote for them? Especially making me run to school from Waterloo because I’m constantly on the risk of being late and getting a detention and sitting down in an anti-social basement – which looks quiet similar to those horror films where someone is about to attack you – for half an hour at lunch when my belly is dying for food. Why are we squashed and swashed together in a city like rubbish in an ocean? This city is too small to have this size of population and the more people who live in London the more pollution there is, and I don’t even use a car. Cars? That is the main problem. They are meant to be used for taking people around and all they do is crawl around killing people: why can’t they be banned?

I have a bold solution to this: employ me.
